Using your personal truck for work: when the claim gets denied

The exact facts that push a claim outside a personal auto policy, and how to fix it before it costs you a truck.

Updated August 17, 2026 · 2 min read

Personal auto policies contain a business use exclusion. It is narrower than people fear and broader than people assume, and the difference decides claims.

What personal policies generally allow

What generally falls outside

The denials we actually see

A landscaper's truck with a trailer, titled personally, driven by a helper. A contractor's crew truck in the company name insured on a personal policy because it was cheaper. A pickup used for daily deliveries with the business name on the door. In each case the facts were visible on day one and nobody asked the question.

When the claim is denied, three things are uncovered at once: the other party's damage, your truck, and your legal defense.

How carriers find out

The fix is usually cheap

For many sole owners, telling the carrier about business use and adding an endorsement solves it. For anyone with employees or a titled business vehicle, a commercial policy is the answer, and it also brings the higher limits that customers and general contractors require.

Common follow-up questions

Is a magnetic door sign a problem?

The sign is not the issue. It just tells an adjuster to look at how the vehicle is used, and the use is what governs.

What if I only haul materials sometimes?

Occasional carrying of your own tools is usually fine. Regular hauling for customers is not. Tell your carrier and let them decide in writing.

Can I keep the truck in my name and put it on a commercial policy?

Often yes, with the business as an additional insured or the individual as the named insured. The structure matters, so have it set up deliberately.
