Can I get life insurance without a medical exam?
How no-exam underwriting works, how much coverage you can get, and when the exam is worth taking anyway.
Yes, and it has become the normal path rather than the exception. What used to require a nurse at your kitchen table at seven in the morning is now often an application, a phone interview and a database check.
How carriers decide without an exam
They already have more information than most applicants realize. Carriers check a prescription history database, motor vehicle records, and a shared industry file of past insurance applications. For many healthy applicants that is enough to price a policy in a day or two.
What you can get
- Final expense policies, 5,000 to 25,000 dollars, are almost always issued without an exam
- Accelerated underwriting at several carriers goes to 1,000,000 dollars or more for healthy applicants under 60
- Guaranteed issue policies ask no health questions at all, but cost the most and pay a limited benefit for the first two or three years
When the exam is worth taking
No-exam convenience is priced in. If you are in good health, taking the exam often produces a better rate class and a lower premium for the entire term. On a large 20 year term policy, that difference can be thousands of dollars over the life of the coverage.
The exam itself is short: height, weight, blood pressure, a blood and urine sample, usually at your home or office at no cost to you.
Where no-exam is clearly the right call
- You need coverage in place quickly for a divorce decree, a loan or a business agreement
- You have a needle phobia or a schedule that makes the exam unlikely to happen
- You are buying a small final expense policy where the price difference is minor
- You have a condition that is well controlled and you know how it reads on paper
Answer the questions carefully
No exam does not mean no underwriting. The application is still a legal document, and a material misstatement can void the policy during the first two years. See the situations where a claim is denied.

Common follow-up questions
How fast can a no-exam policy be issued?
Some carriers approve the same day. Two to five business days is typical. A policy requiring an exam usually takes three to six weeks.
Will they check my medical records?
They can, and for larger face amounts they usually do. They also check prescription history, which reveals most conditions on its own.
Is no-exam coverage real coverage?
Yes. It is the same contract with the same death benefit. The difference is how the carrier decided to price it.
