Box truck insurance in Texas: what it costs and what you need
Weight classes, DOT requirements, cargo coverage and the difference between local delivery and long haul.
Box trucks fall in an awkward middle. They are too large for a personal policy, too small for many trucking programs, and the requirements change depending on weight, what you haul and how far you go.
The weight line that matters
A truck with a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,001 pounds used in interstate commerce generally requires a USDOT number and federal minimum liability. Most 16 to 26 foot box trucks sit above that line. Below it, and staying entirely inside Texas, requirements are lighter but insurers still rate them commercially.
What the policy usually includes
- Liability, commonly 750,000 or 1,000,000 dollars for DOT regulated operations
- Physical damage on the truck, rated on the value including the body
- Cargo coverage for what you are hauling
- Non-trucking or bobtail coverage if you lease onto another carrier
- General liability, because loading and unloading is where a lot of injuries happen
What drives the price
- Radius of operation. A truck that stays within 50 miles of McAllen prices very differently from one running to Dallas
- Driver experience and motor vehicle records, which matter more than almost anything else
- Cargo type, since electronics and produce price differently from furniture
- Vehicle value and age
- Claims history, including cargo claims
- Whether you have a DOT number and how long it has been active
New authority is expensive
A brand new operation with a fresh DOT number and no loss history pays a premium for that. It improves after the first and second year of clean operation. If you are starting out, budget for it and plan to re-shop at each renewal, because the improvement is real.
Loading and unloading
Most cargo claims we see are not accidents on the road. They are damage during loading, improper securing, and temperature failures. Photograph loads, use proper securement, and keep the bills of lading. Documentation is what gets a cargo claim paid.

Common follow-up questions
Do I need a CDL for a box truck?
Generally not under 26,001 pounds gross vehicle weight rating and without hazardous materials. Insurance requirements apply regardless of whether a CDL does.
Does my policy cover the cargo automatically?
No. Motor truck cargo is a separate coverage with its own limit and exclusions. Check the exclusions carefully for your commodity.
Can I insure a box truck on a personal policy?
No. Personal auto policies exclude vehicles of this type and use.
