What is SR-22 insurance in Texas and how long do I need it?
The filing, what triggers it, what it costs, and the mistake that restarts the clock.
SR-22 is not a type of insurance. It is a form your insurance company files with the state proving you carry at least the required liability coverage. People say SR-22 insurance because the requirement and the policy arrive together.
What triggers it
- A DWI conviction
- Driving without insurance, particularly a repeat offense
- An accident while uninsured
- Certain license suspensions and reinstatements
- Too many violations in a short period
The court or the Department of Public Safety tells you it is required. You then tell your insurance company, which files the form electronically.
How long
Two years from the date of conviction is the common requirement in Texas, and it can be longer depending on the offense. The important detail is that the clock is tied to the conviction date, not to the day you bought the policy.
The mistake that restarts everything
If your policy lapses while the SR-22 is active, the insurer notifies the state and your license can be suspended immediately. Reinstating usually means new fees and, in some cases, a fresh filing period. Set the premium to draft automatically and do not let it miss.
What it costs
The filing fee itself is small, usually under 50 dollars. The expense is the underlying policy, because the event that triggered the SR-22 also moved you into a higher rate class. A DWI conviction can double a premium or more, and it affects your rate for three to five years.
How to keep the cost down
- Shop it. Carriers differ enormously in how they price a DWI, and the first quote is rarely the best one
- Keep the coverage continuous with no gaps
- Take any court ordered course promptly, and keep the certificate
- Consider raising the deductible rather than cutting liability limits
- Re-shop the policy every year, because the surcharge decreases as the conviction ages
If you do not own a car
You can file a non-owner SR-22 policy, which provides liability coverage when you drive a vehicle you do not own. It is usually much cheaper and it satisfies the filing requirement so your license can be reinstated.

Common follow-up questions
How fast can the filing be made?
Usually the same day the policy is issued. Most carriers file electronically and the state receives it within a day or two.
Does the SR-22 follow me if I move out of Texas?
The requirement generally does. Your new state's insurer will need to make a filing back to Texas, and not every carrier will.
When can I drop it?
When the state says the period is complete. Ask for confirmation before you cancel anything, because dropping it early triggers a suspension.
