Does my car insurance cover Uber, DoorDash or delivery driving?

The gap between your personal policy and the app's coverage, and the endorsement that closes it.

Updated August 17, 2026 · 2 min read

Personal auto policies exclude carrying passengers or goods for a fee. If you drive for a rideshare or delivery app without telling your insurer, you have a hole in your coverage during exactly the hours you are on the road most.

The three periods

Period one is where most drivers are exposed. The app's coverage is thin, and your personal policy excludes the activity.

The fix

A rideshare endorsement added to your personal policy. Most major carriers in Texas offer one, it costs a modest amount per month, and it extends your own coverage into the waiting period and coordinates with the app's coverage.

Food delivery is not the same as rideshare

Some carriers write the rideshare endorsement but exclude delivery of goods, and others cover both. If you deliver for a food or package app, ask specifically. Getting a yes for Uber does not automatically mean a yes for DoorDash.

What happens if you do not disclose it

A claim during a delivery can be denied for the excluded activity, leaving you with the repair, the other driver's damage and possibly a cancelled policy. Carriers do look. Dash cameras, app records and the other driver's statement all come up in claims.

If you drive commercially in a real way

If the driving is a business rather than a side income, a commercial auto policy may be the right structure. The line is usually about how much of the vehicle's use is business and whether the vehicle is titled to a business.

Common follow-up questions

Does the app's insurance cover my car?

Sometimes, during an active trip, and usually with a deductible far higher than yours. Between trips there is generally no physical damage coverage at all.

Will adding the endorsement raise my rate a lot?

Usually it is a small monthly amount. It is far less than a denied claim.

What if I only drive occasionally?

The exclusion applies regardless of how often. One trip is enough to trigger it if a crash happens then.
