Can I keep my doctor with a Marketplace plan?

Only if they are in that specific plan's network. Here is how to check properly and what the plan type tells you.

Only if that doctor is in the network of the specific plan you choose. Marketplace plans use networks, and in this area those networks can be narrow.

Check before you enroll, not after

Do not rely on asking whether a practice takes a carrier. A carrier sells many different plans and a practice may be contracted with some and not others.

Ask this: are you in network for this exact plan name, for the coming plan year? Ask the billing office rather than the front desk, and write down who told you and when. This one question prevents most Marketplace billing surprises.

Use two sources

  1. Call the provider's billing office directly.
  2. Check the plan's own provider directory.
  3. If they disagree, trust the billing office and ask the plan to confirm in writing.

Plan directories are frequently out of date. This is a documented industry problem rather than a local one.

Check the hospital separately

A doctor in network who admits to an out of network hospital is a problem waiting to happen. Ask which hospital your physician uses, then check that hospital against the plan.

Also check any labs, imaging centers or specialists you use regularly.

Plan types and what they mean

If keeping a specific doctor matters and they are not in the HMO networks available, a PPO may be worth the premium. Check whether one is offered here first.

Protection against surprise bills

Federal rules now protect you from surprise balance billing in specific situations: emergency care at an out of network facility, and out of network providers who treat you at an in network hospital, such as an anesthesiologist or radiologist you did not choose.

That protection is real and worth knowing about. It does not cover routine care you choose to receive out of network.

Common follow-up questions

My doctor takes my insurance company. Is that enough?

No. Carriers run many plans and a practice may accept only some of them. Ask about the specific plan by name.

Are emergencies covered out of network?

Yes, and federal rules protect you from surprise balance billing for emergency care and for out of network providers at an in network hospital.

Can I change plans if my doctor leaves the network?

Generally not mid year. A network change is usually not a qualifying event, so you would wait for open enrollment.
