What is guaranteed issue life insurance?

No health questions, no exam, and a waiting period that matters. When this is the right policy and when it is a last resort.

Guaranteed issue life insurance accepts everyone in the eligible age range. No health questions, no medical exam, no prescription check. If you apply and you are between roughly 50 and 80, you are approved.

The trade

Two things pay for that certainty. The premium is the highest per dollar of coverage in the market, and the full death benefit does not apply immediately.

Most guaranteed issue policies have a two or three year graded period. If you die of natural causes during that window, the policy returns the premiums you paid plus interest, often around 10 percent, rather than the face amount. Accidental death is usually covered in full from day one. After the graded period ends, the full benefit applies for any cause.

Who it is genuinely right for

Who should not buy it

Anyone who could qualify for a simplified issue final expense policy instead. That is most people over 60, including many with diabetes, controlled blood pressure, past cancer that is years behind them, and other managed conditions. A level benefit policy costs less and pays in full from day one. Buying guaranteed issue without applying elsewhere first can cost a family the entire benefit if death comes early.

How to shop it

Watch for television advertising that shows a very low monthly price. That price is almost always for a small amount of coverage at the youngest eligible age, and the benefit is graded.

Common follow-up questions

Is guaranteed issue the same as final expense?

Not quite. Final expense is the category. Most final expense policies ask health questions and pay in full from day one. Guaranteed issue is the version that asks nothing and grades the benefit.

What happens if I die in year one?

On most guaranteed issue policies your beneficiary receives your premiums back plus interest, unless the death was accidental, which is usually covered in full.

Can I be turned down?

Not for health, within the eligible ages. Applications are still subject to age limits and the carrier's maximum face amount.
