Can I get car insurance with a matrícula consular or foreign license?

What Texas actually requires to insure a car, which documents carriers accept, and how to avoid overpaying for it.

You do not need a Texas driver license or a Social Security number to buy auto insurance in Texas. You need a vehicle, an insurable interest in it, and identification the carrier accepts. Several companies write these policies every day in McAllen.

Documents that commonly work

What changes without a Texas license

Not the legality of the policy. What changes is which carriers will quote it and at what price. Standard carriers often decline, and the nonstandard market that specializes in these policies prices them higher. That is why shopping matters more here, not less.

If you are eligible to get a Texas license, doing so usually improves your rate at renewal, because carriers can then pull a Texas motor vehicle record and see a clean history.

Watch for named driver policies

Many low-cost policies sold in this market are named driver policies, which cover only the people listed by name and exclude everyone else who drives the car. If your spouse takes the car to work and is not named, a crash that day may not be covered. Ask directly whether the policy is named driver or named insured, and get the answer in writing.

Driving into Mexico

A Texas policy does not cover you in Mexico. Mexican law requires liability from an insurer authorized there. If you cross regularly, buy a Mexican policy separately, and read this before your next trip.

Common follow-up questions

Is it legal to insure a car without a Social Security number?

Yes. Texas does not require a Social Security number to buy auto insurance. Carriers set their own documentation rules, which is why the company matters.

Can I insure a car titled in someone else's name?

Usually you need an insurable interest in the vehicle. Some carriers allow it with an explanation and the owner listed. Tell the agent the truth about who owns and who drives, or the claim gets complicated.

Will prior insurance from Mexico count?

A few carriers will credit documented prior coverage. Bring the paperwork, because it can move you out of the highest rate tier.
