Trailer interchange and non-owned trailer coverage
Who pays when a trailer you do not own is damaged in your care, and the endorsement most carriers do not include by default.
A truck pulling a trailer it does not own is a common arrangement and a common gap. Liability generally follows the power unit, but physical damage to someone else's trailer does not come along automatically.
The two coverages, and they are different
- Trailer interchange coverage applies when you have a written interchange agreement, which is standard in drayage and intermodal work. It covers damage to the trailer in your possession under that agreement
- Non-owned trailer physical damage applies when there is no interchange agreement, for example a trailer you borrowed or rented
Buying one when you needed the other is a common mistake, and the claim is where it shows up.
When you need it
- Pulling containers or chassis under an interchange agreement
- Renting a trailer for a seasonal surge
- Borrowing a trailer from another carrier or a customer
- Hauling a customer owned trailer as part of the job
How much to carry
Set the limit at the replacement value of the most expensive trailer you would ever pull, not the average. Reefer trailers cost far more than dry vans, and a chassis is cheaper than either. The premium difference between a 30,000 dollar limit and a 60,000 dollar limit is usually small.
Read the agreement you signed
Interchange agreements typically make you responsible for the equipment regardless of fault, including damage that happens while parked. That is a broader obligation than negligence, and your coverage needs to match it.
Cargo is still separate
Trailer coverage pays for the trailer. The freight inside it is motor truck cargo coverage, with its own limit and its own exclusions. Both are needed if you are hauling someone else's trailer with someone else's freight in it.
Practical habits
- Photograph any trailer at hook and at drop, including the roof and the doors
- Note pre-existing damage on the interchange receipt before you leave the yard
- Keep the agreement with the policy, so a claim starts with both documents in hand

Common follow-up questions
Does my liability cover the trailer I am pulling?
Liability covers harm you cause to others. Damage to the trailer itself needs interchange or non-owned trailer physical damage coverage.
Is coverage automatic on a rented trailer?
Not usually. Some policies include a small amount for short-term rentals. Check the limit, because it is often far below the trailer's value.
Do I need it for my own trailers?
No. Owned trailers should be scheduled on the policy with their values.
