Can I get life insurance with an ITIN or a matrícula consular?
What carriers actually require to issue a policy, which documents work, and what to expect if you do not have a Social Security number.
This is one of the most common questions we get in McAllen, and the answer is better than most people expect. A Social Security number is not a legal requirement to buy life insurance in Texas. Several carriers issue policies to applicants using an ITIN, and some accept a matrícula consular as part of the identity file.
What carriers are actually checking
- Identity, through a government issued document
- Insurable interest and a legitimate reason for the coverage amount
- Residency, meaning you live here rather than visit
- Financial justification, so the face amount matches your income and obligations
- Health, through the usual questions and sometimes an exam
None of that requires citizenship. What it requires is a consistent, documented picture of who you are and why you need the coverage.
Documents that commonly work
- ITIN letter or a tax return filed with an ITIN
- Valid passport from your country of origin
- Matrícula consular, accepted by some carriers as supporting identification
- Texas driver license or state ID if you have one
- Proof of address such as a utility bill or lease
- Proof of income such as pay stubs, a 1099 or a tax return
Where applications get declined
Rarely for the ITIN itself. More often for a mismatch: an address that does not match the documents, a face amount far larger than the stated income, or a very recent arrival with no US financial history. Carriers differ on how long you must have been in the country, and that requirement is usually the one that decides which company to apply to.
Coverage on relatives living in Mexico
Generally not available. Carriers require the insured person to live in the United States and to complete underwriting here. A policy on a parent who visits but lives in Matamoros or Reynosa is not something a US carrier will issue, and any agent telling you otherwise is worth a second opinion.
Why using an agent matters here
Carrier rules on ITIN applicants are not published on their websites and they change. Applying to the wrong company creates a decline on your record for no reason. We already know which carriers write these cases and which do not.

Common follow-up questions
Do I need to be a citizen or a permanent resident?
No. Several carriers write applicants with an ITIN who live and work here. Requirements vary by company, particularly on how long you have been in the country.
Will the insurance company report me to immigration?
Insurers underwrite risk. They are not immigration authorities and they do not report applicants. They do verify identity, which is standard for any financial product.
Can my family in Mexico be the beneficiary?
Usually yes. Beneficiaries do not have to live in the United States. Give a full legal name, date of birth and address so the claim can be paid without delay.
